FOR a nation not officially at war with any enemy within or outside its territory, the sheer size and sophistication of the haul is staggering. Several mind-numbing questions sprang up at the scene: “Who placed the order for these weapons of
mass death? Who is he or she out to take down and why? What do-or-die affair were these meant to prosecute in the country? Given the legendary laxity of officialdom, could some of these high-calibre weaponry have already slipped in? No one can tell
but the saga continues.
And so, more sophisticated ammunitions were yesterday uncovered in the on-going joint inspection operations mounted by the nation’s law enforcement agencies on the 13 containers laden with military weapons currently at the Apapa, Lagos
ports.
But in a twist to the incidence, Israeli officials said on Thursday that the military-grade armaments seized at the Apapa shipping terminal in Nigeria came from Iran and were bound for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
The military officials, according to agency reports, would not provide evidence to support their claims, citing “security concerns.”
However, Ismail Radwan, a Hamas leader in Gaza, denied the weapons were headed to Gaza.
However, the information initially appeared to conflict with claims by the Nigeria Customs officials that the weaponry, which included 107 mm artillery rockets, were to be used in Nigeria.
Iran remains a bitter enemy of Israel and supports Islamic militant groups in Lebanon and Gaza that are in a state of war with the Jewish state. In the winter of 2008, Israel launched a military campaign against Iran-backed militants in Gaza in
an attempt to stop years of almost daily rocket attacks on southern Israel.
The two containers thoroughly searched yesterday yielded an array of mortars and other military assault weapons. Eight containers have been opened thus far.
The ammunitions were neatly buried inside crates of marble in an apparent camouflage.
Sources at the inspection scene who spoke on the condition of anonymity, expressed optimism that more weapons would be unearthed in other containers waiting to be opened.
“As at 3.10 p.m. today (yesterday), we are about concluding the search inspection on the second container for today and the eighth container, in total,” the source disclosed to The Guardian.
Contrary to the speculations on the consignment’s origin, impeccable Customs sources told The Guardian that intelligence reports indicated that the containers actually originated from one of the countries with sophisticated nuclear power
capability in the Middle East, Iran.
On his tour of the scene yesterday, Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdulahi Dikko, attributed the successful interception of the deadly cargo to the collaborative efforts of the nation’s law enforcement agencies at the seaports.
According to him, immediately the cargo arrived, security alert was raised based on previous intelligence reports and suspicions about the cargo. He said the promptness of the security agencies made it difficult for any shipping agency to
successfully clear the cargoes out of the port.
Dikko added: “If anybody had wanted to clear this cargo, it could never have been cleared. There was an attempt to deny it and it shows that there was query on it from Immigrations. We have a very strong system, which can detect any
irregularity even from the clearing process.”
He assure of the security agencies’ resolve to investigate the matter to a logical conclusion, with a view to unmasking owners of the shipment and the motive for their act
In a statement by the Customs Image-maker, Wale Adeniyi, an Assistant Comptroller, the agency said initial investigations had shown that its system had blocked attempts by the importers to clear the containers due to observed irregularities in
the import documents.
Dikko, according to the statement, stressed that the Customs system was set up to thwart any suspicious importations, adding that the seized containers were discovered following their lack of Form M and Risk Assessment Report (RAR).
To forestall future occurrence, Dikko said he has directed all Customs field operatives to remain vigilant, “as more criminally minded importers will make similar attempts to test our resolve.”
He charged Nigerians to volunteer useful information to the Service, stressing that “the security of the nation is a collective responsibility of all security agencies, and indeed all patriotic and well-meaning Nigerians.”
